During 2000 and 2001 the ~olony was abandoned during the nesting season and most birds
failed to nest successfully.

In January 2002, a task torce of natural resource personnel concerned about the Peltier Island
hero my met to discussion management considerations tor the future ofthe.heronry. A review of
the circumstances of these abandonments . as well an analysis of the scientific literatUre has
prompted recommendations for a buffer zone and "Slow-No Wake Zone" designation on a
portion of the lal(e to protect the heronry and other significant natural resources on the island and
in dIe northern portion of the lake.

From a natural resource perspective, the initial location for the placement of the no-wake zone
boundary proposed by the task terce was u line south of the island and extending east and west
along the southern boundary line.of Sections II, and 10 from shore to shor~. - The no-wake zone
would be for all surface water on Peltier Lake north of dus line (This alignment is not depicted
on the attached map).

On March 6, 2002 dle Lino Lakes City Council heard testimony from Iakeshore homeowne~s
regarding the proposed alignment of the no-wal(e boundary. In response to the concerns of the
homeowners, two alternative alignments have be~n defined.

Alternative 1
The no wake ZOlle bowldury li.ne would be a line extending from the west shore of the lake east
along the southern boundary line of Sections 11 and 10 to a point directly south of the southeast
corner of the island. TIle line would then angle northeasterly to a permanent survey point located
on the ~astem shore of Peltier Lake on property owned by l\I1r. Ronald Marier which lies due
west of the southernmost outbuilding of.rvlr. Marier's property. The slow no-wake zone is
proposed for all surface water on Peltier Lal(e north of this .line.

ONR Information; 651-296-6157 " 1-388-646-6367 '> Try: 651-296-5484 '> t-300-657-3929

An e!Jual Opportunity Employer
Who V:lIl1cs Diversity

o

Prtntad an HacycJed Paper Containing a
Mlnlmum of 10".4 Post.consumer Waara
