~ Metropolitan Council To: From: Date: Re: Local Officials Libby Starling, Metropolitan Council Research Manager April 10, 2008 Population/Household Estimates Workshops Please join the Metropolitan Council for a workshop to learn more about its methodology for estimating current local populations and households. Each year since 1971, the Metropolitan Council estimates the current population and household counts for each of the 186 cities and townships within the seven-county Twin Cities metropolitan area. The Council's model, revised in 2006 in consultation with demographers from the University of Minnesota's Minnesota Population Center, incorporates annual updates of housing unit inventory, occupancy rates and household sizes. To ensure that the local governments understand the Council's population and household estimates, the Council invites you or your representatives to attend one of three sessions of a workshop where Council Research staff will present its approach: . Wednesday, April 30, I :30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. . Monday, May 12, 1:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. . Tuesday, May 13, 1 :30 p.m. to 3 :00 p.m. Workshop participants will learn the methodology behind the Council's model, preparing them to receive their own community's estimates at the end of May. Workshops will be held at the Metropolitan Council central office at 390 North Robert Street in downtown St. Paul.
