Apparently, numerous Centerville residents have voiced concerns that the
aggregate used in the project, specifically granite trap rock chips, is too sharp and that aggregate
still remains in the streets.

To fITst address the aggregate type; by using the trap rock chips, the resulting street has greater
wearability and a longer effective life than can be achieved using pea gravel. The sharper trap
rock chips get greater penetration into the street surface and have a lesser affinity to be removed
as time goes on. The aggregate used on the Centerville streets is also a harder substance than
the pea gravel that is used elsewhere, again, increasing the wearability of the street.

Rock remaining in the street after the completion of the sea1coat is swept up by the contractor
and this was adequately completed by Allied Blacktop, Inc. as specified; however, additional
aggregate may work free in the days immediately following application. Under normal
conditions, the warm weather through the late summer months will allow more aggregate to
penetrate the street surface as the underlying bituminous softens in the sun. As the temperatures
this past summer never reached 90 degrees, this additional penetration was not as effective as
one would expect in a normal summer, thus some residual aggregate still remains in the streets.

Two possible actions may be taken in this situation, the City may hire a contractor to sweep the
streets prior to winter or the City may leave the aggregate in place.
