G~~z!f~

CITY OF CENTERVILLE PARKS
AND RECREATION COMMITTEE

Proposal submitted to: Centerville, Minnesota, Parks and Recreation committee

Submitted by: Patrick Branch, Member Parks and Recreation Committee

Proposal: That the Centerville Parks and Recreation committee sponsor a competitive run
and fun walk around Centerville Lake for the purposes of: stimulating community awareness
in Centerville's recreation opportunities, supporting Centerville businesses, and raising park
and recreation funding.

Funding Objective: Races of this nature are typically supported by participant fees and
sponsored by local business offering related products or services.

I) The objective should be to off-set race expenses through sponsor donations.

2) Runner's fees could be used to fund Centerville's Park and Recreation annual budget. A
well planned race should draw approximately 1,000 runners/walkers. A $25 fee is
reasonable. The potential is to net $25,000 for Centerville's parks.

Recommended Timing: Saturday of Fete des Lacs weekend at approximated 7:00 or 8:00
o'clock in the morning. Due to planning times required this event may have to wait until Fete
des Lacs 2009.

Course: The exact course remains to be determined and certified. Approximate course would
begin and end in Laurie laMotte Memorial Park and would circle the Centerville Lake via the
Rice Creek Regional Park and the new trail along state route 14.

Factors to Consider:

I) This event will require considerable planning and organization. Recommend that we hire
a race management firm to assist in both planning and conducting the race.

2) Coordination and support from local law enforcement and medical readiness team is a
must.

3) Success will be dependent upon active sponsorship from a food and water vender. A
health and fitness sponsor would be helpful.

4) Volunteers are very important. Recommend we work with local Scout Troops and
Churches for manning water stations and course monitors.

5) Advertising the event is critical. The need to advertise where it will be seen by runners
may be a guiding factor in selecting the best date for this event.

6) City Council approval is necessary. We will need up-front funding to start the planning
and advertising. The amount of early funding has not been determined. Early funding
will be returned to the City Council in full after the event.

The full Parks and Recreation Committee will need to be involved. I will volunteer to be the
Race Director and to lead the Race Committee.
