<br />February 15,2001 <br />COlIIlCiI Meeting Minutes <br /> <br />requirement and no posting requirements as the meetings are strictly for informational <br />purposes. <br /> <br />Mayor Swedberg stated he would like to try and create a system where Council depends <br />on public input and this Committee helps Council gather and interpret same. <br /> <br />Council Member Capra stated she would like to see the Committee meet with and get <br />information from the current communications people. <br /> <br />Council Member Travis stated the people usually at the Council meetings are there in <br />opposition to something and usually the main complaint is lack of knowledge. Council <br />Member Travis stated any way the City can improve communication with residents is a <br />good idea. <br /> <br />Ms. Brenner questioned where Council would like to start. Council Member Broussard <br />Vickers stated she thought it would be appropriate to start with the website and cable <br />channel. Council Member Capra suggested the Committee prioritize the list and present <br />it to Council. <br /> <br />Council Member Nelson stated she would like a centralized way to distribute information <br />from residents to Council Members such as one phone line that feeds into the voice mail <br />of all Council Members. <br /> <br />Council Member Nelson suggested an area on the website that residents could post <br />questions for the City to answer. <br /> <br />Council Member Travis requested the City use systems already in place but work to <br />improve them. <br /> <br />Mr. March stated the citizen survey may be a valuable tool for communications and <br />suggested the City use it and look into other alternatives to reach those that do not read <br />newspapers or watch television. <br /> <br />Mayor Swedberg suggested using information from The League of Minnesota Cities to <br />get information on ways to inform citizens. <br /> <br />Mr. March stated Council would need to assign some costs to the technology and time to <br />inform residents. If the communication suggested would be overtaxing to current City <br />capabilities that would need to be discussed in the report, as the City may need to hire <br />additional staff. <br /> <br />Council Member Capra stated she would like to make sure the Committee does not run <br />into conflicts of interest by having members benefiting financially from suggestions <br />made by being on the Committee. <br /> <br />Motion bv Mavor Swedbel'2. seconded bv Council Member Travis to authorize the <br />formation of an Ad-hoc Citizen Communications Task Force and aoPOint Theresa <br />Brenner as chair. AU in favor. Motion carried unanimouslv. <br />
