Page 1 of2

Kim Stephan

From: Gregg Thompson [gregg@metroswcd.org]
Sent: Friday, July 25, 2008 9:45 PM
To: Statz, Mark R
Cc: McDowell, Jeff J
Subject: Re: Hidden Spring Park
Attachments: P6040111.JPG; P6040108.JPG; P6040109.JPG

Mark,

I would consider adding in many, many more sedges and iris, because of:
- their proven performance in this specific raingarden's hydrology
_ they are cool-season and thusly will show up early in the spring - warm-season plants, which can be very useful
and beautiful, when delayed by cool-soils, can cause some of the general public some concern that 'the plants
are dead').

I'm attaching photos of a raingarden from Minnetonka's City Hall that consists of mass plantings of Fox Sedge at
the groundlayer within the raingarden basin (and clusters of red osier dogwood, and periodic tamarack and river
birch), surrounded at the edges with Dwarf Bush Honeysuckle. Its sort of from the 'less is more' school. Its also
easier to determine what needs to be weeded out of the planting - less plant diversity = easier to distinguish what
doesn't belong for a person who isn't an expert on native plants.

Something to consider for the replanting at the raingarden at Hidden Springs Park.

Thanks,
Gregg

Gregg Thompson
Urban Conservation Specialist
Association of Metropolitan Soil & Water Conservation Districts
(763) 286-6985 (cell)
gregg@metroswcd.org

-- Original Message --
From: Statz, Mark R
To: gregg@metroswcd.org
Cc: McDowell, Jeff J
Sent: Thursday, July 24, 20082:20 PM
Subject: Hidden Spring Park

Gregg,

Attached is a revised planting plan for the Rain Garden in HSP.
