In
previous discussions with the council at special work sessions, a number of costs cutting
measures were proposed to bring down the overall cost of the project. We have listed each of
those items, their potential savings and the implications of eliminating them from the re-bid
projects. The council should give direction on each.

Rain Garden PlantinGs $125.000
The previous bid contained provisions to install either native plants in the rain gardens or simply
have them seeded with turf grass. This choice was to be at the discretion of the homeowner. If
the homeowner agreed to maintain them, there would be no charge for the installation of plants.
Removing this item from the re-bid would eliminate that option for the homeowner.

PavinG RinGS In lieu of Standard MH Adjustments $14.000
UtiliZing steel manhole adjustment rings in lieu of standard adjustments for the wear course
could save a substantial sum. The only downside is that this technique is fairly new.

Saw&. Seal Bituminous $17.000
We had proposed the use of a technique called Saw- and Seal. The new bituminous mat is sawed
and sealed immediately after installation, much like concrete. This allows us to control the
location and frequency of thermal cracking. The item is not needed, but was something the
public works department wanted to look into using in the future.

CleaninG of storm Sewers $7.000
Bid items had been included to pay for the cleaning of storm sewers downstream of the project
to help promote better flow and ensure our finished product works well. This work could be
done in-house at the cost of staff time and perhaps some rental fees for equipment.

St.Paul
51. Cloud
Rochester
Milwaukee
Chicago
