New volunteer association organized

Ann Higgins

Late last full, the new Minnesota Association for Volunteer Administration
(MA V A) was organized as a statewide alliance to provide a single voice to
represent shared interests of those working with volunteers throughout the state.
MAVA's first president is Susan Ellis, who is also president of Energize, Inc., a
training, consulting, and publishing firm that specializes in volunteerism. MAVA
represents the interest of those who mobilize local resources, finding and
placing a wide variety of people into the roles where they are needed.
The formation ofMAVA comes on the heels of the closing of the Minne-
sota Office of Citizenship andVolnnteer Services (MOCVS) on Jan. 31. MAVA
hopes to continue a number offunctionspreviously performed by MOCVS.
MOCVS was closed as a result of the governor's recoIIlIIlendations for reducing
state expenditures.
MAVA plans to offer education and resources for volunteer programs and
services, and reduce duplication of efforts. Ellis has indicated the new volunteer
organization is interested in learning about people who are heading up volun-
teer activities and the challenges they face. MAVA is asking fOr interested
volunteer coordinators and administrators, particularly from outside the Twin
Cities metro area, to join and participate in conunittee activities. Work can be
done from your city via telephone or e-mail. For more information, contact
Jean Nierenhausen at (651) 284-0435 or jean.nierenhausen@mnhs.org.
Membership in MAVA includes a number of categories, ranging from
individual membership at $35 per year or organizational memberships that start
at $50 for the first employee and $35 for each additional employee. For more
information and a membership registration fOrm, contact Nancy Thomes at
(952) 857-0520 or nancy.thomes@alz.org.

~ Seeking Input

MPCA looking for woril group participants

The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) is seeking assistance from
local governments to find homeowners willing to participate in a work group
to discuss the MPCA's role in the statewide individual sewage treatment system
(ISTS) program.
