<br />. <br />-,,' <br />! l~ don't create fDIIoI.rn...LINItIers create leaders <br />Serve on the LMC Board of Directors <br /> <br />From its very beginn;ng the League <br />of Minnesota Cities has flourished by <br />its leadership's constatlt focus on <br />bringing city leaders together as a <br />unified and influential furce.A dedicated <br />Boanl of Directors has been vital to <br />the accomplishment of this goal.As <br />the governing body of the League, the <br />Boanl must keep the interests of cities <br />in mind at all times. Thus, serving on <br />the Boanl is both an honor and a <br />responsibility. <br />Unlike the governing bodies of <br />some private companies, the prerequi- <br />sites fur serving on the League Boanl <br />do not include wealth, prestige or <br />professional status. Rather, leadership <br />skills, knowledge, dedication, vision <br />and professionalism are the types of <br />qnalities that distingnish leaders selected <br />fur the League Boanl. The 18 individu- <br />als serving on the Board blend together <br />to strengthen the League through <br /> <br />their diversity and unique experiences. <br />The actions of Board members not <br />only impact cities in the present, but <br />also "shape" the future direction of <br />the League as it strives to make a <br />positive impact on community lifi: <br />and the state as a whole. <br />The roles and responsibilities of <br />those who serve on the Board of <br />Directors go fur beyond the stated duties <br />outlined in the League's Constitution <br />and By-Laws. LMC Boanl members <br />are also role models fur other city <br />leaders. The most valued and SllCCess- <br />ful Boanl members model such <br />characteristics as: <br />. The ability to motivate citizens to <br />participate in their local government; <br />. A caring concern for all cities in <br />the state; <br />. A high level of participation in <br />meetings and other League activities; <br />. A willingness to consider others' <br />perspectives; and <br /> <br />City officials needed to serve <br /> <br />on LMC Nominating Committee <br /> <br />The Nominating Committee plays an important role in selecting the <br />League Boanl of Directors. The conunittee convenes on Wednesday,June 19 <br />at the Annual Conference in Rochester to interview candidates for Board <br />and officer positions. The committee's recommendations are presented to <br />member cities at the LMC business meeting. <br />The Nominating Committee is made up of 8 to 12 city officials, <br />consisting of both elected and appointed officials, with attention to issues <br />such as gender, city size, and geography. <br />City officials interested in serving should contact Donyelle <br />Mikacevich at (651) 281-1202 or (800) 925-1122/toll-JIee.The LMC <br />Boanl of Directors is expected to appoint the Nominating Committee by <br />May 31... <br /> <br />. A desire to discuss options fully and <br />come to group consensus. <br />If you are interested in serving <br />on the League's Board of Directors <br />for 2002-2003, you must complete a <br />nomination form and submit a brief <br />resume no later than May 31,2002. <br />In June, there will be eight open <br />positions on the Board of Directors. <br />As there are no incumbents for the <br />officer positions, LMC members will <br />elect a president, I" vice president, <br />2"" vice president, and five directors. <br />Open officer positions could be filled <br />by current board members, resulting <br />in additional director opening1l. <br />A Nominating Committee <br />appointed by the current LMC Board <br />of Directo" will interview candidates <br />in a meeting open to all city officials. <br />This year's meeting will be held on <br />Wednesday, June 19 at the LMC <br />Annual Conference in Rochester. <br />The recommended candidates will <br />be presented to member cities at the <br />LMC business meeting on June 20. <br />In addition to each nominee's <br />past involvement in League activities, <br />the Committee comide" geographic <br />representation, gender, and city <br />population when selecting nominees. <br />To request a nomination form <br />and to obtain a copy of the LMC <br />Nominating Committee Guidelines <br />for 2002, contact Jim Miller, execu- <br />tive director, at (651) 281-1205, toll <br />free at 1-800-925-1122 or bye-mail <br />atjmiller@Jmnc.org.Aletter contain- <br />ing the nomination form and the <br />committee guidelines will also be sent <br />to each member city's administrator <br />or clerk in the near future. ... <br /> <br />April 17,2002 <br /> <br />Page 5 <br />
