Worker safety and technology

The increasing use of computers in the wodcplace may increase the number of wOlKers'
compensation claims from city employees who have suffered repetitive stress injuries. Cities can
reduce the risk of liability from this type of claim by establishing an office ergonomics program.
Ergonomics is the science of fitting the job to the worker. Ergonomics programs can reduce the
risk of work-related repetitive stress injuries that can occur when there is a mismatch between an
employee and his or her workstation. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration
(OSHA) recently proposed new rules for an ergonomics standard and some argue that this is
evidence that OSHA is moving toward adopting some type of national ergonomics standard.
There is a brief sununary in the Appendix that outlines some basic information that managers
should know to ensure proper office ergonomics. Please contact the League of Minnesota Cities
for more information about starting an ergonomics program in your city.

Susan Naughton 3/00

8
