Employees are expected to use their computers in a professional and business like <br />manner. While the City encourages IU1d supports employee Wle of computer systems as a means <br />of improVing productivity, certain restrictions are neoesSlll'Y to avoid improprieties, emure that <br />establiahed standards are mot. and maintain appropriate security of computerized <1ata. The intent <br />of these procedures is to ensure that use of the City computer systems is consistent with the best <br />interests of the City. These procedures do no~ attempt to articulate all required or proscribed <br />beaaviors by users, but merely cover the most conspicuous examples. <br /> <br />2 DEFINITIONS <br /> <br />For the purposes of the procedures in this guideline, the following definitions shall apply: <br /> <br />Applleatlon: The system, process or problem to which a computer, pro$l'am or software is <br />applied. Examples include complaint tracking, sign inventory, utility billing, etc. <br /> <br />Data File: Collections of data accumulated for a definite use. Examples include word processing <br />documents, spreadsheets, databases, etc. <br /> <br />Hardware: The electric, electronic, and mechanical equipment used to process data. Examples <br />include the-central proce.;sing unit, keyboard. monitor, printer, etc. <br /> <br />Informati(\1\ Resou.rce$ - Any information in digital electronic format, including, but not limited. <br />to electronic mail, voicemail.localdatabases.extemaUyaccesseddatabases.clip art, digital <br />images, voice and sound recordings. ' <br /> <br />Internet- A vast collection ofint=nnected. computer networks that can exchange inforIDl/.tiotl <br />through the use of common protocols. The World Wide Web (W'Y/W) runs on the Internet. <br /> <br />LAN (Local Area Network) - A network consisting of electronic devices communicating with <br />one another and sharing hardware, software, data, and infonnation resources. <br /> <br />Program: A unique set of instructions, purchased by the City, created by City staff or by <br />consultants, that tell the computer how to perform a function or series of functions. <br /> <br />Software: A set of programs that teU the computer how to perform a function or series of <br />functions, u.ually created by commercia! firms for sale and general use in specific types of <br />applicatiOns. <br /> <br />Template: A stored pattern of instl'\lctions or macros, developed in software, for rmorrning the <br />same repetitive process on different sets of data. <br /> <br />Computer Policy <br /> <br />I <br />
