r ~

i Mediation Services
for Anoka County

~l

May 17, 2002

Kim Moore-Sykes
City of CentervilJe
1880 Main St.
CentervilJe, MN 55038

Dear Kim:

This year Mediation Services (MSAC) celebrates its 15th Anniversary. Since 1987, we have expanded services,
visibility and credibility, and have played a unique role in your community. Referrals from police departments,
sheriff's deputies, local elected officials and staff have increased as mediation is recognized as an effective
strategy in preventing escalating conflict and potential violence. In addition, we continue to provide restorative
justice services as we improve our understanding of the needs of victims, offenders, and our communities.

Since 1987, MSAC has asked the communities of Anoka County to budget a contribution to continue free or
low cost mediation and conflict resolution services to their community. I am again asking that you include a
contribution in your 2003 budget. Please consider an increase from .09 cents per capita to a request of .10 cents
per capita or ($320.00). Mediation Services has succeeded by continually evolving to respond to the needs of
your community. We provide an alternative forum for individuals to better communicate and demonstrate
civility. In the next decade, serving an increasingly diverse community represents both an incredible challenge
and opportunity for us.

We provide information about the mediation process to both schools and the community. This effort proactively
teaches peaceful, conflict resolution skills to adults and children. These trainings build the capacity within
families, schools, and communities to peacefully address future conflicts.

Over the past 15 years, the funding provided by our partnership with local governments served as a foundation
for county, state and private sources of support. In 1987, 73% of our funding came from local government. In
2003, it is projected to represent I 0%. Local government funding has been an extraordinary support, allowing
our programs to grow and mature. We greatly appreciate your role in our efforts and hope you will budget our
request for 2003. We look forward to working with you in the future. My staff and I are available to provide
you with a better understanding of our services and referral process.

Please visit our website at www.mediationservice.org. I can be contacted at 763-422-8878 for further
information, questions or to schedule a visit.

Best regards,
!2-- Wf. ~//U<:1~.d'~.L.,

Ann M.Wallerstedt
Executive Director

an:ls

encl.
