Over the same period of time, total <br /> <br />But building contractor <br />employment rose slightly <br /> <br />U.S. employment declined by a slight <br />0.2% - although jobs in the manufac- <br />turfug sector contracted by a steep 3.5%. <br />Construction jobs increased, albeit <br />slightly, for the first time in the previous <br />three months during December. Over the <br /> <br />previous year, the number of employees <br />working for general building contractor <br />firms actually iocreased by 1.4%. But spe- <br />cial trade contractors employed 1.5% <br />fewer workers at year-end 2002 than at <br />year-end 2001, and employment totals <br />with !inns involved primarily in heavy, <br />construction work feU by 4.7% over the <br />most-recent 12-month period.' <br />Between September and December of <br />last year, the total number of jobs, sea- <br />sonally adjusted, with nonbuildingl- <br />heavy contractors fen by 2.1 %, while <br />employment with genera! building con- <br />tractor firms rose 0.5%.
