<br />Downtown Excelsior, which thrived as a tourist destination during the <br />heyday of the resort era of Lake Minnetonka, is still considered by many to <br />be the downtown for the entire southern shore of Lake Minnetonka. While <br />Downtown Excelsior already possesses many positive qualities: a compact <br />downtown core, distinctive natural amenities, and a mixture of housing <br />types and commercial building stock, the City must address a range of <br />issues if it is to maintain and strengthen those advantages. Initiatives that <br />the HKGi-led consultant team hasdeveloped include improvements to the <br />Port of Excelsior; distinctive gateways into the city from Highway 7; <br />streetscape and design guidelines that promote mixed-use, pedestrian <br />activity and capitalize on Excelsior's historic qualities; and the establishment <br />of a Farmer's Market to help spur greater downtown activity.
