school's sports roster and look at upcoming city events to plan their coverage
schedules. They try hard to balance many different sports for both genders, and
three high schools. They also work very hard to follow any of our teams if they
should make it into any kind of post-season
scenario.

Volunteer Camera operators make
coverage ofthe USA Cup Soccer
Tournament possible

Kenton and Matt have nurtured a reliable
group of volunteers who have become very
technically adept. The number of volunteers
helping out this past year was slightly more
than the previous year. Volunteers also put
in quite a few more hours. This is partially
due to a larger number of van shoots than in
the previous year.

During our move, the production truck
remained a functioning studio control room,
so it was often used for shoots that would have normally been produced in the
studio.

I am very pleased with the work the van department has done this year. Even
though availability of the truck wasn't influenced by our move, there were other
factors that should have resulted in fewer van shoots for the year.

First, we purchased four new camera packages over the summer. Our Video
Engineer, Rick, decided that as long as he was integrating the new equipment he
might as well re-wire and test the entire truck. So he did. It took a total of about
three weeks to get everything up to his specs. . . three weeks that the truck was
unavailable for a shoot.

In addition, Kenton Kipp, our Van Director, underwent two separate back
surgeries in 2004. He wasn't allowed to do any heavy lifting for quite a while
after each surgery. His assistant, Matt Waldron, did an excellent job of
maintaining our traditionally busy production schedule. It is another example of
how well the staffing system we developed for the van and news departments is
serving us.

140
120
100
80
60
40
20
o

Statistically
speaking it was
a very good year
for the
.. .# of Shoots production truck.
.# of Volunteers

All of our
indicators, from

1998 1999 2000 2001 2002 2003 2004

9
