Council Member Sweeney offered he would rather see a community center than just a '
youth center. He also questioned where it would be located. / de 4F5 G y " l '
Council Member Brenner stated it would be located near the current biic
building. The City owns all of that land by public works. The pl is to build a youth
center, bike ramps, basketball court, and a heritage museum all in that area.
Council Member Travis questioned what was meant by complete ordinance codification.
Mr. March explained this is a long awaited process which will take considerable time to
complete. It is something that has needed to be done. He offered this is something the
City could do over time, possibly a little at time through council meetings. Other
communities have taken up to 2 - 2 1/2 years to complete on their own codification.
Some communities have hired interns to waik the streets to find violators (i.e.: junk
vehicles, weeds, nuisances, etc.).
Mayor Wilharber questioned if it would be better to have an attorney complete the
codification for us, or possibly the intern.
Jim March noted that our current intern, James Bownik has been the most productive and
competent we have had, and more than likely we will be l09(, ing him.
Council Member Sweeney mentioned there were no mentions of park and trails on any of
the mentioned goals. He stressed it is very important to allocate the use of our parks. He
mentioned there aren't any football fields, tennis courts or basketball courts, and the grass
isn't kept up very well at any of the parks.
Mr. March commented this has been discussed in the past. Adding that in the past it was
always more important to take land over cash for park dedication fees, but recently it has
been more important to take cash over land. Currently the Park and Recreation
Committee is looking into making the Acorn Creek Park more appealing to older
residents. Park and Recreation would like to see BBQ pits, picnic tables, benches,
horseshoe pits, and possibly a dock on the pond or benches around the pond in the park
area. He stressed the City needs to develop the parks we currently have. Mr. March also
added the DNA has a lot more money this year than in the past, thus there are several
grants the City will be applying for to help with the development of parks and trails.
LaMotte Park is a mini- regional park - open to all communities - not just Centerville.
The Lions Club would like to build a shelter / concession stand in LaMotte Park to use at
the annual Fete des' Lacs Celebration. They currently pay $2000.00 for two (2) days of
tent rental.
Council Member Nelson mentioned she felt the community is confused about the MN
Design Team. She felt the Council should go through the plans and determine which ones
the City intends to support and eliminate those the City chooses not to support.
5
