Citizen and Business Person of the Year
Criteria for nomination
The following is the EDC report to the City Council on the nomination
criteria for the Citizen and Business Person of the Year.
❑ Citizen of the Year- This person would need to be a resident of the city
within the calendar year of nomination.
❑ Business Person of the Year- Would not have to be a resident of
Centerville, but would need to be business owner conducting business
within the city during the calendar year of nomination.
❑ The Citizen or Business Person being nominated should be nominated for
volunteer efforts or accomplishments that they have made to the city for
the calendar year that the nomination is for. The lifetime achievement
award may better honor nominations for things done years before.
❑ We would like to see the voting for these honors done by all City Staff
and City Committees, i.e. Planning and Zoning, Economic Development,
Parks and Recreation. This would open the voting to 30 or more votes
making it a better across the board ratio than having just one committee
responsible for the vote.
❑ The actual voting process would take place by paper ballot that would be
placed in sealed envelopes and tabulated by the EDC or City Staff. The
ballots would be numbered in order to keep track as to which ballots have
been returned or as indication of voting, if needed. If an individual
voting serves on more than one committee or is on a committee and a
staff member they would be allowed only one ballot for voting.
❑ If a member of any of the city committees or city staff were nominated
for an award they would be removed from voting for that award. For
example if Ted Red was nominated for Business Person of the Year and
he also served on the Planning and Zoning Board he would be removed
from voting for Business Person of the Year, but would be included in
the voting of Citizen of the Year. This would be beneficial in avoiding
any conflict of interest regarding the voting.
❑ We also believe that no one should be excluded from the process if they
have received the award in the past. An example would be that if Ted
Red won Citizen of the Year in 1997 and was nominated again in 1998
they should still be considered for the 1998 award.
