MEMO
DATE : July 23, 1999
TO : Honorable Mayor and Council/Park and Recreation Committee
FROM : Jim March
RE : MS Funds for Acom Creek Playground Equipment
**************************** * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * **
I have been in contact with Sharon Deziel from the Multiple Sclerosis Society. Sharon mentioned
that the City has approximately $12,000 in our account that needs to be used preferably by year's
end. The dollars are from the charitable gambling that occurs at Kelly's Korner.
I suggest that the funds be used to offset a portion of the match required from the park dedication
funds to be used to secure the $45,000 grant from the Minnesota DNR. As you know, the
majority of the grant dollars are going to be used to purchase accessible playground equipment in
Acorn Creek Park.
It is sometimes difficult to find eligible projects in which to expend the charitable gambling funds.
Ms. Deziel thought the playground equipment purchase would be an excellent use of the funds. I
want to gain approval on this issue from the park and recreation committee as well. The Iess park
dedication funds we need to use to match the DNR grant, the more funds we will have to expend
in other parks for other uses.
