social /leisure opportunities; and increase leadership skills and
involvement in the community.
Typical services provided by Arc include: helping a family find
an appropriate group home for their adult child; helping an adult
living on their own resolve problems on the job so they are not
fired; helping an individual living on their own apply for
medical assistance to help cover extensive medical bills due to a
prolonged illness or surgery. Adults with developmental
disabilities living and working in the community are under-
employed in lower paying jobs, most often working part -time
without benefits.
Without the assistance of an Are advocate to help resolve
problems, many of these people would lose jobs, become homeless,
or face financial crisis.
Adaptive Equipment and Toy Lending Library: A second component
of this proposal is to provide families with children birth
through age seven with resources to borrow a variety of toys and
adaptive equipment designed to stimulate child development.
Funds are specifically being requested to maintain the library
and enhance the adaptive equipment and computer section of the
library.
The Toy and Adaptive Equipment Lending Library allows families to
borrow a variety of toys, costly child development materials, and
adaptive equipment thus enabling participants to use limited
financial resources on other family concerns such as housing,
food, and clothing.
Families are charged an annual fee which is based on income and
can check out up to four toys for one month or adaptive equipment
for us to four months.
Over the years Arc has been successful in building an inventory
of moderate priced toys that are not only fund for children but
also promote child development and learning. Due to the high
cost of adaptive equipment, we have not been able to purchase
items in demand by families. Because these items require
technical expertise to research and purchase, they are not
donated by the many companies and community groups that sponsor
toy drives for us each year.
B.
