WH CS Serving Persons with Developmental Disabilities and their Families
••'est hennepin community services 1001 state highway 7 hopkins, minnesota 55305 612/933 -9105
August 25, 1994
Becky Dvorak
Lino Lakes Park and Rec.
7204 Lake Drive
Lino Lakes, MN 55014
Hi Becky,
Here is some information regarding West Hennepin Community
Services and its recreation component. Unfortunately, I
couldn't find any history of our programs so I'll briefly
explain.
Currently at West Hennepin Community Services we have 2
full -time Therapeutic Recreation Specialists. We do the same
job and have the same job responsibilities however different
geographical areas. The West consortium cities are
Hopkins /Minnetonka & St. Louis Park. The Northwest consortium
cities are Maple Grove, Brooklyn Park, Brooklyn Center,
Plymouth, Robbinsdale, New Hope, Crystal & Golden Valley.
West Hennepin Community Services recreation provides an
adapted recreation program for these cities. Examples of some
adapted programs are softball, basketball, teen social, teen
bowling, teen camping, adult social, adult bowling, children
social and an leisure education program. I have enclosed some
summer brochures to help explain them. We also provide an
inclusion service, which allows individuals with disabilities
access to the local park and rec activities of the cities
listed above with the exception of Maple Grove and Plymouth.
We provide individual assessments, goal development, one to
one inclusion facilitators, recommendations for adaptations,
and support (blue brochures). This is provided at no extra
charge for the participants into the city park and recreation
activity.
West Hennepin Community Services is funded through the
county and other various sources however the recreation
department also has a contract with each of the 10 cities in
the consortium. Quarterly reports are done by the two full -
time Therapeutic Recreation Specialist at West Hennepin
Community Services which contain the number of participants at
each program and from which city. Quarterly meetings with
WHCS staff and the recreation coordinators from the cities
