1
ITEM 2 — PROJECT NARRATIVE
Provide a one -page description of your project.
1. Describe what recreation facilities will be developed or rehabilitated and any
lands that will be acquired.
2. Describe your community's need for these facilities and how they will
complement existing recreation facilities.
LaMotte Park Revitalization
Recreational facilities to be developed /revitalized: Our goal is to encourage family
recreation within the City of Centerville, by designing a highly recreational park for
families and children of all ages. The Park and Recreation Committee hopes to add an
innovative play - structure and to pave the existing parking lot to make the park more
accessible.
Land acquirement: There is no land to be acquired to complete this project. LaMotte
Park was recently expanded through the acquisition of 12.41 acres purchased in
December 1996. This purchase brought the total park acreage to approximately 20 acres
of dedicated parkland. The City has expended monies from park dedication funds on the
acquisition of land and Phase I of the development. The first phase included construction
of a non -paved parking lot, three ball fields, two soccer fields, storm water
improvements, site grading, seeding/mulching, and construction of a pleasure rink and
renovation of the existing hockey rink.
Community need: The City of Centerville is requesting an Outdoor Recreation Grant to
continue with the revitalization of Laurie LaMotte Memorial Park. Completing this park
will enable the residents of Centerville to enjoy outdoor recreation while encouraging
family activities within the community. LaMotte Park is the largest park in the City of
Centerville and there currently is no playground structure in this park. In addition, by
paving the parking lot, the City will be creating a suitable trailhead into the Rice Creek
Regional Park Reserve. The proposed Lino Lakes YMCA has submitted written interest
to the City to provide organized summer youth activities to the City at LaMotte Park.
There currently are no organized local City sponsored youth activities in the community.
A paved parking lot and playground structure would enhance any youth activities that
would be planned for this location.
