ITEM 2 - PROJIECT N,ARRATIVE
Provide a one-page description of your project.
1.. Describe what recreation facilities will be developed or rehabilitated and any
, lands that will be acqwired.
2. Describe your community's need for these facilities and how they will
' coinplement eisting recreationa.i facilities.
Laurie LalVlotte Memorial Park Revitalization
Recreational Facilities to be Developed/Revitalized: Our goal is to add some needed
amenities to Centerville's largest municipai park. The facilities to be deveioped include
playground equipment, a concession/shelter building, bleachers, benches and a bike rack. ,
Land Acquisition: There is no land to be acquired to complete this project. LaMotte I
Park was recently etpanded through the acquisition of 12.41 acres purchased in
December 1996. This purchase brought the total park acreage to approximately twenty
(20) acres of dedicated parkland. The City has expended monies from park dedication '
funds on the acquisition of this aciditional parkland and some initial baze land
iffiprovements. These improvements consisted of a non-paved parking lot; three (3)ball I
fields, two (2) soccer fields, storm water improvements, site grading, seeding/mulching, '
cflnstruction of a pleasure rink and renovation of a hockey rink. ,
Community Need: The City of Centerville is requesting an Outdoor Recreation Grant to
continue wi#h the revitaliza.tion of LaMotte Park. LaMotte Park is the ]argest municipal
park within the City of Centerville and the park does not currently have any playground
equipment or a concession/shelter building. These items were determined as urgent '
needs through an eensive process of citizen participation. i
All of the ballfields and the soccex fields are scheduled evezy night of the week Monday — '
Thursday during the summer months. The Centennial Soccer Club and Chain of Lakes
Little League have a combined enrollment of nearly 2,400 children in their programs.
The recent census shows that the City of Centerville's population has increased by over
96% in the Iast decade. A staggering 34% of our population fals beiow the age of 18.
Bleachers and benches are desperately needed to accommodate the large ntunbers of
parents that come to the park each evening to watch the games and practices. Even
though the City built a large parking lot, the parking lot exceeds its capacity each evening
and the spectator vehicles line both sides o LaMotte Drive eending into the City of
Lino Lakes. It is thought that if a concession/sheiter buding cotild be funded, future
dollars for park improvements could be more thau adequately generted from the
concession proceeds tha.t would be earned by our Parks and Recreation Committee.
