June 5, 2001
Planning and Zoning Workshop Meeting Minntes
Chairperson Hanson opened the public hearing at 6:34 p.m.
Mr. March reviewed the Ordinance #4 amendments and indicated that the Commission
may desire to set a maximum size for accessory structures in the M-1 district. Mr. March
stated that the Commission would need to hold a public hearing concerning mini-storage
before making the recommendation to Council.
Commissioner Brainard asked Mr. March if he could survey the surrounding
communities to determine the maximum size accessory structure in a M-1 district.
Commissioner Kilian indicated he did not think the accessory structure should exceed the
square footage of the principal structure.
Mr. Wilharber stated he would like to see the information from surrounding communities
and add a height restriction.
Commissioner Kilian stated that the Commission had previously set a height restriction.
Council Liaison Broussard Vickers suggested allowing accessory structures for !
residential use in a M-1 district to be fifty percent (50%) of the rear yard.
Commissioner Kilian stated that he felt the Commission should indicate the structure
could be 50% of the rear yard, but not to exceed the size of the principal structure. I
Commissioner DeVine indicated that the Iots in downtown were split into 100-foot lots
and some residents own mare than one (1) lot. Commission DeVine stated one (1) I
resident would need to come before the Commission to rejoin the lots, which seems I
unfair.
Council Liaison Broussard Vickers stated that the property owner has the option to sell II
the lots separately if they were divided and may not desire to rejoin them.
Council Liaison Broussard Vickers stated that the Ordinance stated there must be a
principal structure on the lot in order to build an accessory structure.
Commissioner DeVine indicated he was concerned about how the suggested change
would affect a property owner with more than one (1) lot, as they may be able to build a
large building.
Council Liaison Broussard Vickers stated that the requirement for the accessory structure
not exceed the square footage of the principal structure, should limit the size of the
accessory structures because she is unaware of any large principal structures in the
downtown area.
Commissioner DeVine indicated he felt the matter needed to be researched and further
I discussed.
