I Jim March
From: LeBlanc, Wayne J [Wayne.LeBlanc@UNISYS.com)
Sent: Tuesday, March 06, 2001 2:24 PM
To: 'Brian Walter'; 'dougorter@efunds.com ; 'Karia DeVine ; 'Jim March'
Cc: LeBlanc, Wame J
Subject: Youth Programs for City of Cerrterville
(Jim, could you please forward one copy to Jill and one to Tedd. Thanks.)
These topics will probably come up March 8 in our Park and Rec meeting, but
I'd like to list a framework so the big picture is clearly visible.
The topic is: Summer Programs for Youth
It looks like a daily program from the YMCA is shaping up nicely!
That program seems to cover ages 6 to 10 every day. Hopefully, this will
really happen this year. If it doesn't happen, it is a big gap.
The visit from Mr. Murowski from Wargo also looks great. Good work
Karla. Programs there likely vary and transportation may need more
consideration.
A skate park could offer unstructured activity for age ranges 8 and
up or so.
One thing missing seems to be structured activity for ages 11 and I
up. Is it time to ask for a summer program director to coordinate everything
and plug the holes? The Council seems very interested in a comprehensive
summer program for the city and now may be the time to ask to budget for
such a thing. It is not in our budget now. Unless we're exceedingly lucky, I
suspect a comprehensive summer youth program will require further
expenditures.
(A side note: It seems like adult programs will be organized by Mr. Bisek or
others whether the city does something formal or not. However, if the city
had a summer program director, perhaps some adult programs could also be
handled.) '
So, here is a first stab at a job description for a summer program director:
Co-ordinate and help advertise existing programs in and around the
city (YMCA, Wargo, others). Use the LeJournal, web pages, cable, etc.
Solve transportation issues to and from the various program
locations.
Process fees if applicable.
Create programs for age ranges and proqram interest areas not
covered. Be inventive with program ideas. Parks are not necessarily
required. For example, a canoe trip might be a sponsored activity.
Arrange programs for youth and/or adults (as directed by Park and
Rec and Council priorities and budget allocated.)
Depending, this job migh.t be done by existing city staff, or,
perhaps there is enough to do to justify an additional part time person, or,
eventually, a full time person in the summer.
Just some thoughts for your consideration.
.
1
