New Brighton completed building a community center in <br /> 199�. The center currently Ieases space to marry dii�erent organizations far revenue: �'he <br /> city built their center through an Economic Development Authority Revenue Bond. <br /> Presently, witlr the revenue bonds �n� t�re rema�s the cvmmunity center is covering 9Q% <br /> of its operating expenses. After polling the community, the city decided that there would <br /> be na fees chaxged to New Brighton residents. <br /> Ms. Capra continued stating that meeting space is Iimited in our area, and that the school <br /> district is currently turning down 40°10 of th� calls due to lack of space. Ms. Capra <br /> indicated that even with Circle Pines btiilding a community center and Lino Lakes building <br /> a YMCA; there is still a large demand f6r space, <br /> Theresa Brenner questioned wha.t facilities would be put into the center. Ms. Brenner <br /> indicated the teens that she has taiked to really have their hearts set on having their ovcm <br /> little place. The teens l�ave given Ms. Brenner the feeling that teens won't use the <br /> cQmmunity center if it is for everybody, it wili� not rneet tlze teens need. Ms. Brer��r <br /> stated that when she talks to adults they say to put it aIl together, that we don't need two <br /> segarate buiidings. Ms. Brennerfeels trta�t she� is in the rniddle, because the teens are <br /> telling her that they want their own place, it is important to them. Ms. Capra added that <br /> Morey And�rson who works for the New Brightvn Recreation Departm�nt; has been in <br /> the business for 35 years and commented that in dealing with youth centers, you will see <br /> children from grades 5-9 using the facility oft� but y�u will not get thase teerrs from a�e <br /> 15 and up because they do not wa.nt adult supervision. Lucy Thompson suggested <br /> checking out the internet to find other ciries that have had the same conversatic,n that we <br /> are having now.
