Since our streets are connected to area waters
through storm drains, it is important to keep grass clippings,
leaf litter and other organic debris off driveways, sidewalks
and streets. In winter, freezing and thawing can cause leaves
and other organic debris to release soluble forms of phosphate
(and nitrates). When these chemicals run off frozen ground
during spring snow melt and early spring rains, they can end
up in surface water.
Please compost these items appropriately. Dumping in
wetlands are prohibited. Wetlands are valuable natural
resources that improve our quality of life and are worth
protecting. Wetlands filter water and improve water quality,
enhance recreational activities such as birding, hunting and
fishing, provide educational opportunities, help control
flooding, provide wildlife habitat and provide products we
consume everyday.
You can help the quality of our wetlands by composting your
leaves, grass clippings and compost on an upland portion on
your property so the nutrients do not leech into the low area.
There is a nominal fee of $20.00 and a $.50 surcharge fee for an
The idea is to not load wetlands with excessive nutrients.
in ground sprinkler system and a permit may be obtained at
Dumping compost into a wetland is like throwing bags of
City Hall.
