6908 Oak Circle Backyard Drainage Project

Issue brought up by city council was that this is not a group issue and would
only impact an individual residence.
Eliminating the backyard drainage problem at 6908 Oak Circle would benefit
numerous residence of the city of Centerville through mosquito control.

The backyard drainage issue at 6908 Oak Circle creates a large body of
stagnant water that takes weeks to fully drain, even as we are actively
pumping out the water, as it refills every time it rains and remains wet for
months.
This creates a perfect breeding ground for Aedes vexans mosquitos.
This type of mosquito is a "floodwater" mosquito that lays its eggs on moist
surfaces near stagnant flood water and relies on periodic submersion for
eggs to hatch into larvae (Mosquito control and stormwater management,
2023).
Practices that would seem to cause mosquito breeding to proliferate would
include water basins or holding areas that hold water in a stagnant condition
for longer than 3 days" (Mosquito control and stormwater management,
2023).
According to the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency, controlling standing
and stagnant water, and adapting design and habitat conditions are the
ways Minnesotans can avoid a proliferation of mosquito breeding.

This species of mosquitos can carry the parasite worm that causes heart
worms (Metropolitan Mosquito Control District), which results in severe
31 lung disease, heart failure, other organ damage, and death in pets (The Facts
about Heartworm Disease, 2022).

Aedes vexans mosquitos can fly further than 20 miles from the hatch site
(The Mosquito Life Cycle, n.d) which makes the backyard drainage problem

a 5 out of the 6 residences that share a property line with us drain into our
backyard. The 3 houses that were built behind us after our house was built
all drain into our backyard which is an issue that should have been
addressed when the houses were being built.
