Memorandum
Date:September 24, 2024
To:Honorable Chairand Committee Members
Parks and Recreation Committee
From:Mark Statz, PE –City Administrator/Engineer
Paul Palzer –Public Works Director
Subject:Playground Equipment Replacement Plan
Adaptive Play Equipment
Background
At their last meeting, the City Council readopted the Playground Equipment Replacement
Plan, with revisions to move LaMotte Park’s equipment up to 2025 and Royal Meadows’
back to 2030, in alignment with theParks Committee’s recommendations.
Further, they agreed with thecommittee that the installation of adaptive play equipment
at LaMotte Park shouldbe done in conjunction with the replacement of the existing
equipment for a more cohesive overall project.
A total budget for the work at LaMotte Park was approved at $427,000, with $300,000
coming from the Capital Equipment Replacement Fund and$127,000 from the Park
Dedication Fund.
The next steps for the project are to develop a Request for Proposals to send out to
various vendors. Staff is actively working on this document and will bring a draft back to
the committee at its November meeting, for review. We anticipate working through the
RFP process in the coming months with the goal of constructing the project in the
summer of 2025.
Royal Meadows Park
Staff also assured the Council that efforts would be made to ensure the safety and
playability of the equipment at Royal Meadows Park, immediately. Staff is happy to
report that the stair elements of that playground, which were the main source of concern,
are now on order and should be able to be replaced as soon as they come in. The cost of
these elements will fit within the parks annual maintenance budget and will not come
from either capital fund.
Acorn Creek Park
In addition to the work planned for LaMotte Park, the approved Playground Equipment
Replacement Plan included replacement of the decking on the playground in Acorn Creek
Park. Staff has ordered these parts and are looking at a winter replacement for these
elements.
Summary
This memo is meant asan update only and no formal action from the Parks Committee is
needed at this time. A Request for Proposals will be on the November Agenda for
review.
