This tragic fire killed more than 250 people, destroyed 17,400 structures, and left over 100,000 people homeless. The theme this year is “Charge into Fire Safety”: Lithium-Ion Batteries in Your Home.” When it comes to lithium-ion batteries, it is important to buy, charge, and recycle safely. Most of the electronics we use in our homes every day—are powered by lithium-ion batteries. In fact, most everything that is rechargeable uses this type of battery. If not used correctly or if damaged, lithium-ion batteries can overheat, start a fire, or even explode. To reduce these risks, look around your home. It’s important to know which devices are powered by them. Charge into Fire Safety: 3 Steps Buy only listed products. When buying a product that uses a lithium-ion battery, look for a safety certification mark such as UL, ETL, or CSA. This means it meets important safety standards. x Charge devices safely. Always use the cords that came with the product to charge. Following the instructions from the manufacturer. Buy new chargers from the manufacturer or one that the manufacturer has approved. Charge your device on a hard surface. Don’t overcharge your device. Unplug it or remove the battery when it’s fully charged. 15 x Recycle batteries responsibly. Don’t throw lithium-ion batteries in the trash or regular recycling bins because they could start a fire. Recycle your device or battery at a safe battery recycling location. Visit call2recycle.org to find a recycling spot near you. While Fire Prevention Week happens once a year, fire prevention is everyone’s responsibility year-round. Lithium-ion batteries are powerful, and care must be taken when using them. Buying safe products, charging devices properly, and recycling batteries responsibly can help keep ourselves and homes safe from lithium- ion battery fires. But battery safety is only one aspect of fire safety. Make sure you are doing your part by creating and practicing a home fire escape plan. Be on the lookout for and correct some common fire hazards, such as unattended cooking, smoking indoors, disabled smoke alarms, and electrical issues. Common household items powered by lithium batteries: Mobile phones, tablets, laptops, smart watches, headphones, cordless vacuum cleaners, toys, remote-controlled cars, power tools, e-cigarettes/vapes, e-bikes, e-scooters, e-vehicles, golf carts, hoverboards and drones to name a few. The National Fire Protection Association (nfpa.org) is a source of information. You’ll find their informative video on YouTube at: bit.ly/NFPAbattersafety. COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT Development Inquiries x One PLANNING & ZONING On October 7, 2026, the Planning & Zoning Commission will hold a work session at 6:30p.m. in lieu of their regularly scheduled meeting.
