City Planner Nathan Fuerst and his colleague Mike Thompson presented an update on the downtown
vision study. Highlights include the number of responses to the visual preference study to date,
along with an overview of the open house held February 25th. To recap, residents who attended the
open house expressed a desire to have more places to eat, drink, and gather. They did not want
“high-rise” development, chain stores/restaurants. Residents communicated that they want good
parking, walkability, and safe crossing improvements; they also want more places to go for daily
services. It was noted that residents do want to impact existing homes.
City Planner Fuerst also reviewed three development scenarios based on public input.
• Scenario 1 – Traditional Commercial Core
• Scenario 2 – Mixed-Use Center of Activity
• Scenario 3 – Neighborhood-Scale
Other points of interest during the discussion include moving the core of downtown one block
south to Sorel Street. Discussion also ensued about seeking commercial development on Block 7
and moving development toward the lake.
III. ADJOURNMENT
Motion by Commissioner Seppala, seconded by Commissioner Carciofini, to adjourn the work
session at 8:02 p.m. All in favor. Motion carried.
