Home My WebLink About1990-04-10 Minutes r Pursuant to due call and notice thereof the Park and Recreation Committee of the City of Centerville held their regular meeting on Tuesday, April 10, 1990. Chairman Dixon called the meeting to order at 7:02 p.m. Present: Drilling, Reisdorfer Absent: LeTendre. APPEARANCES_ ORVILLE HUGHES, PUBLIC WORKS DTRECTO$ GATE FOR CENTRAL_ PARK Discussion on the need for a gate at Central Park. Orville Hughes, Public Works Director, was present. It appeared the need for a gate at Central Park is due to fire and party problems. The gate would close by the ice rink. The gate would be 14" x 4' with a cost of approximately $150, A key from City Hall would not be necessary for the opening of the gate. A key would only be needed for snow plowing and grass cutting. Motion by Dixon, second by Drilling to have Orville Hughes obtain a gate for Central Park. FENCE AT CENTRA.L._PARK • • It was noted that the north corner by the lift station needs a gate or fence to close it off. It was also noted that the snow fence needs to come down. The storage of gas cans is no longer permitted, per insurance. It was also questioned as to what kind of fence would be used for the outfield of the balifield. WAFER TONER PARK Discussion of the new park located by the water tower. Orville Hughes noted that steel stakes were put in on the boundaries. Trees, grading, leveling off and cleaning needs to be done. Question was to who would pay of this Carol Pelton, City Council member, was present to discuss the possibility of the cleaning up of this area by the volunteers for Earth Day on April 21, 1990. Orville Hughes asked that if there is anything else the Park and Recreation Committee wants from the Public Works Department to please notify him due to a smaller staff. FRANK ZTMNY - CENTENNTAL ICE ARENA Discussion on the possibility of a Centennial Ice Arena. Frank Zimny, 7252 La Valle Drive, was present. Mr. Zimny noted that some of the problems they were encountering are: - fund raising - politics - physical facility Mr. Zimny also expressed some avenues in which this ice arena could be achieved: - 3 -way partnership P &R Meeting Minutes April 10, 1990 Page Two - Anoka County - ISD - asked to contribute $400,000 and a land referendum - Centennial community asked to contribute what they can. The estimated cost to build the Centennial Ice Arena is $1,000,000. The community needs to come up with $250,000 from hockey families, businesses, cities, ect. The location of the Arena would be at the main Centennial campus next to the junior high school. Ground breaking could begin in June 1991 and opening in September 1991. Mr. Zimny would like the Centerville Park and Recreation Committee to contribute any dollar amount they can, and if the building does not get built the money will refunded. • The arena would be used five months for ice, and soccer for seven months. It would be open ear round, with Y some open skating. The referendum is in October. The arena would have olympic size ice and seat 800. The Park and Recreation Committee asked if the monies would be needed after the referendum. The Park and Recreation Committee asked if any volunteer labor could be used CAROL PELTON, CTTY COUNCIL MEMBER Discussion of the planned Arbor Day celebration at the water tower park. Carol Pelton, City Council member, was present. Ms. Felton noted that Myra Spijer and herself would like to plant trees along the north end of the water tower park with the third graders from Centerville Elementary School for Arbor Day. Spruce seedlings, pea shrub, and armor maple are the trees that will be planted on April 27, 1990. Orville Hughes noted that he will get mulch for the plantings. • There appears to be a problem with debris in the park and lawn mowing. Carol Pelton and Orville Hughes somehow got people involved to plant grass. Sonny DaBruzzi will be asked as to the cost of grading the park. The Park and Recreation Committee would be responsible for arranging to have the grass mowed. It was also noted that there is need for a lawn mower. The Park and Recreation Committee should present the City Council with brochures for the purchase of a lawn mower. The seedlings need to be watched so they are not mowed over. Carol Pelton will use posts from the park to put by the trees. L. P &R Meeting Minutes April 10, 1950 Page Three OLD BUSINESS: CENTERHTT,L PARK LAND DEDICATION The Park and Recreation Committee would like to have the $55,000 park dedication fees in lieu of land from the Ce.nterhill development. PURCHASE OF TRATT,ER The Park and Recreation Committee decided not to purchase a trailer at this time. TREASURER'S REPORT The Treasurer's Report was unavailable for this meeting. NTGHT GOLF TOURNAMENT • Information on the night golf fund raiser was not available.
