With the majority of the City's residents <br />served by private wells, a new water -distribution system to be supplied by neighboring. <br />communities is proposed to ensure those affected by the recently discovered. water quality <br />issue can be: provided a Safe, reliable potable water service. Sampling performed recently by <br />the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) and Minnesota ❑epartment of Health (M©H) <br />detected 1,4-dioxane, a likely human.carcinogen, in several private wells in Gem Lake. The. <br />MPCA has been providing residents with bottled. water, which is appreciated, but is a short- <br />term solution. Safe drinking water is of paramount importance for all Minnesota residents. <br />While the cause of the contamination has not been narrowed to one source, the residents of <br />Gem Lake are not responsible for it, nor did they contribute to the issue. This is very much an <br />unexpected issue and is a burden for the residents from a health and safety perspective, but <br />.also from a financial perspective.
