Beekeeping Ordinance Summary <br /> <br />Shakopee <br />- Permitted in all districts <br />- On the Central Business District Zone, hives must be kept on 12 foot <br />or taller roofs. <br />- Not to be located in the front yard, unless lot 5 acres and district <br />setbacks are met <br />- 25 foot setback from property line and any adjacent dwelling unit <br />- If including a flyaway barrier, the setback from a lot line is 15 feet <br />- 25 foot setback from any trail/sidewalk/path <br />- Sales are permitted and may require a home occupation permit <br />- Bee behavior and exceptions are regulated in the Ordinance (Section <br />5. General Regulations) <br />- A water source is required within 10 feet of each colony <br />- Permitted density of colonies ranges from 2 colonies to 32 colonies <br />based on acreage <br />- Beekeepers must register active hive <br />sites via the City's portal <br />St. Francis <br />- Beekeeping is considered an accessory use <br />- Parcels must be 2.25 acres in size or within a PUD <br />- Maximum of 1 hive, and must be less than 3 feet in size in any <br />dimension unless in agriculture use <br />- Removable frame type <br />- 100 foot setback from any property line <br />- Encouraged to register their hive <br />with the City for the purpose of <br />Emergency Management <br />St. Paul <br />Park <br />- Must be a non-commercial hobby, accessory to a single family home <br />- Removable frames must be kept in good condition <br />- A "convenient water source" shall be available <br />- Materials must be disposed of in a sealed bee proof and vermin <br />proof container <br />- Hives must be enclosed with a latching fence <br />- 10 foot setback from the property line <br />- Rear yard only <br />- If a hive is within 25 feet from a property line, then a flyaway barrier <br />of at least six feet in height and continuing 10 feet in either direction <br />parallel to the lot line, is required. All other sides shall have a 4 foot <br />flyaway barrier. <br />- Maximum of 2 colonies <br />- License is required <br />Annual renewal on January 1st <br />- Notification mailed to homes within <br />150 feet of the property
