Lack of Public or Semi�P11blic Qpen Space and Recreational <br />.Areas. There are no publicly held. open and recreational spaces <br />within Gem Lake at this- time. The only recreational facility <br />within the City is a private golf course, ItIs the desire of the City <br />to have thisproperty remain recreational in nature and to see it <br />expand to provide additional recreational opportuxuties. <br />.Although there amrecreational facilities.in adjacentcommunities <br />and. in -nearby regional recreational facilities, there maybe a need <br />iri the future for small_ neighborhood "parks" within. Gem Lake. <br />The City should also examine the establishment of bike trails. <br />within Gem Lake to provide for safe bicycle riding. within the <br />City and connections -to regionalbike paths. Bicycle paths could <br />be included as part o#:.the street improvement projects. The plan supported by.existing zoning calls <br />for. expansion of commercial land development to include. all <br />developable land east. -of U.S. Highway 61 some of which is <br />currently being usedfor residential purposes. The area possesses <br />.poor qualities for residential development -including heavy traffic <br />volumes, rail traffic and no open space.
