2005 Resident Updates HILLARY FARM The development of Hillary Farm is progressing. The private road has been paved and the sanitary sewer installed and tested. The Model Home on Lot # 17 is under construction and should be available for viewing by next summer. Meanwhile, the former Bemis barn is serving well as a sales office. Congratulations to Jim McNulty and his team for working closely with our Planning Commission and engineers to create what will be undoubtedly a very special development in Gem Lake. SCHEUNEMAN ROAD As of August Is', Scheuneman Road from Otter Lake Road to Highway 61 became a city street. With the addition of Scheuneman Road to Tessier Road, Haven Lane, Big Fox Road and Little Fox Lane, we doubled the total length of our city streets. Gem Lake will now maintain, plow and sand the road. Following a series of public hearings that were well attended by residents of Gem Lake, construction commenced rebuilding the (Scheuneman) roadway, closing it's southern access to Highway 61 and installing sanitary sewer along it's entire length. Congratulations to Bel Air Contracting for getting the paving put down just as the asphalt plants were closing. A final lift of paving and repairs to driveways where needed will be applied in late spring or early summer. An assessment hearing will be held in June to discuss repayment ofthe $586,000 bond which was required to pay for the work. SNOWPLOWING & WINTER PARKING In 2005, the Gem Lake City Council selected T.A. Schifsky & Sons as our snow plowing and street sanding contractor. Streets will be plowed on an as needed basis this winter as determined by Nate Jaus, Schifsky's plowing supervisor. Make sure you let us know how we're doing this year so we can improve the system as needed. To help us keep costs down and avoid return trips by our plows and drivers, please DO NOT PARK on City streets until they have been plowed curb -to -curb. For regular plowing concerns during daytime hours, call the City Clerk or T.A. Schifsky's office at 651-777-1313. For after hour and emergency needs, contact Nate Jaus at 651-775- 3451 . COYOTES SIGHTED We were notified in November that a pack of 5 or 6 coyotes has been spotted in several places in the northern half of the City. Based upon sightings, we believe they may have taken up residency in the northwest corner of the City. Generally, coyotes are more afraid of us than we are of them. If sighted, make loud noises and they will generally "bug out". Care should be taken, small pets and children should not be left unattended in the yard and call if concerned. WINTER TREE TRIMMING Please remember that all residents are asked to keep trees trimmed along City streets so that a clear area ten (10') feet high and three (Y) feet back from the curb is maintained. This area is required to avoid costly damage to the snow plows, sanding trucks and street sweepers as they work to keep our streets plowed and sanded. Please check your boulevard and make sure your trees have been trimmed as needed. FREE GUN LOCKS We still have a few remaining gun locks provided by the Ramsey County Sheriff which are available to residents at no charge. Contact the City Clerk for details. DISASTER & HAZARD PLAN Gem Lake has joined several northern suburbs and appointed the Ramsey County office of hazard mitigation to write a disaster and hazard mitigation plan which Gem Lake will put in place in concert with Ramsey County. By joining with the county and other suburbs, a consistent plan will be developed and implemented for the benefit of the community.
