This annual program
provides funds for post-secondary education and is
open to any graduating senior who resides in Gem
Lake. The ten-year-old program is funded though
charitable gambling receipts.

This year’s recipients are Corey Howard Doran (top
photo), Tyler Nathanel Tangwell (middle photo) and
Griffin Stephen Varley (bottom photo).

Corey Doran graduated from the White Bear Area High
School-South Campus. His parents are Molly and Tom
Doran. Corey was very active in sports, including
thirteen years in hockey, seven years in baseball and
two years in football. His academic achievements
included making the “A” honor Roll three years and the
“B” Honor Roll one year.

His teachers praised him for his consistently high-
quality work. For instance, Brietta Hutson,
mathematics teacher for White Bear Lake Area High
School, said the following: “While working with Core y
in AP Statistics, it is easy to see all of the wonderful
qualities he possesses. This is a student with strong
leadership skills, a great work ethic, helpful,
compassionate and mature beyond his years. These
qualities have helped him be very successful in his
academics.”

Corey plans to attend the University of Minnesota-Twin
Cities, concentrating on Medicine or Health Sciences.

Tyler Tangwell graduated from Mahtomedi High
School. His parents are Gary and Deanna Tangwell.
Tyler was active in football for four years, basketball
for three years, and track and field and the Wellness
Club for one year each. His academic achievements
include four years on the honor roll.

According to one of his teachers, Tyler excels at
balancing academics and athletics, while still finding
time for extra-curricular activities and a part-time job.
(continued on page 5)
Three Seniors Awarded Scholarships
