The county mailed the 2013 property tax statements around mid-March. The tax portion for the City of Gem Lake may be incorrect. It appears that the county used the preliminary property tax levy figures, which were higher than the final property tax figures. Tom spoke to officials at the county and learned that they are preparing corrections and will be mailing those to Gem Lake property owners as soon as possible. "This is really a shame," says City Council Member Rick Bosak. "We worked so hard to lower our city taxes for the third year in a row. You don't want to see this kind of thing happen." There is apparently some time needed to reprogram the financial formula into the software in order to generate new statements. Tax Snafu Affects Gem Lake Residents th Sheriff Bostrom Looks to Future of Law Enforcement Ramsey County Sheriff Matt Bostrom spent an evening with citizens of Gem Lake at a recent council meeting, where he had a chance to review 2012 and also look forward to 2013. Although the Sheriff's department has been around since 1849 (yes, that's nine years before Minnesota was a state), much emphasis and planning goes into looking to future law enforcement needs and priorities. These priorities include things like coordinating and collaborating with other local law enforcement agencies and insuring that his staff has the equipment and training they need to keep pace with changing law enforcement concerns.
