Nielsen, Recycling Coordinator Feb-94 CITY OF GEM LAKE I9,94 CURBSIDE RECYCLING INFORMATION WHY SHOULD WE RECYCLE? In the past, we didn't worry much about what happened to the rubbish from our homes, as long as it was gone on trash pickup day. Times have changed, however, and now we know that getting rid of rubbish is a big concern for all citizens. Uncontrolled disposable of all types of rubbish into our landfills and incinerators affects us all as it can pollute both our drinking water and the air we breath. And, the cost of removal of contaminants is rising daily. Soon, we will no longer be able to bury trash of all types in landfills and we may, in fact, be subject to rules about how much trash we can discard. Each year, an average family generates a ton of rubbish. Typically, at least half or more of this rubbish can and should be recycled. Recycling will help reduce our needs for additional landfills, an unattractive eyesore and apace that may not be available in the future. Recycling utilizes renewable resources and creates jobs by supporting manufacturers that use recycled materials. And, recycling protects our environment from the hazards many common trash articles represent. WHO SHOULD RECYCLE? The City of Gem Lake established a curbside recycling program in 1988 in conjunction with Ramsey County, the Metropolitan Council and the State of Minnesota. Since that time, nearly 1/2 of all the resi- dences in Gem Lake have participated in our curbside recycling program. This is great participation, but we would like to see every household do their share to protect our environment. The City of Gem Lake has contracted with WYNNE'S RUBBISH & RECYCLING in St. Paul to provide curbside pickup of recyclables. Far complete information on curbside recycling in Gem Lake, you may call 774-8386 and talk to Kathy at Wynne's. The success of our curbside recycling program depends on everyone's cooperation. Curbside recycling is a joint effort of the City of Gem Lake and you_ If you already recycle, tell a neighbor. If you don't recycle yet, start now and do your part. Together we can improve the water we drink, the air we breath and preserve our lands for better use by future generations. at WHEN DO WE RECYCLE? Our recycling pickup days are the first and third wedneedays times, here are the 1994 recycling pickup dates: 1994 RECYCLING DATES January 5th January 19th February 2nd February 16th March 2nd March 16th April 6th April 20th May 4th May 18th June let June 15th July 6th July 20th August 3rd August 17th On pickup days, materials must be on the curb by 7:00 am Occasionally we do miss a set -out.
