DATE: 11/8/99
ITEM NO,. C 1
Department Approval: Manager Reviewed: Agenda Section:
A Consent
Item Description: Approval of a contract for goose contro
Background* Since 1 988, the City has contracted with the University of Minnesota to capture
and remove geese from sites within Roseville. In 1996, the Council approved a new contract that
reduced the number of sites from which geese are removed from six to three. The three sites
included in the newest contract, which expires on March 15, 2000, are:
Central Park {near Victoria Street}
Langton Lake
Cedarholm Golf Course
In 1 996, the cost of this program was increasing rapidly due to the need to process the geese for
human consumption rather than relocate them to ether states. The number of Roseville sites was
reduced to contain the total cost of the program. The eliminated sites were Ramsey County Parks
at Lae Josephine, Mc arrons Lake and Lake Owasso. Ramsey County has picked up Lake
Josephine as part of its county wide program.
The University of Minnesota is proposing a new one -year contract ending on March 15, 2001.
copy of the proposed contract is attached.
Financial implications: The new proposed contract is for an ann ual cost for all tnree sites of
3,,386. This is approximately 1 higher than the annul cost paid in the last contract of
3X0.
The cost of the goose removal prograrn is included in the propos 20 budget. The cost is
funded equally between the storm utility, golf course fund and general fund.
RECOMMENDED COUNCIL ACTION:
Approval of a motion approving a contract with the University of Minnesota for goose removal
and authorizing the City Manager to sign on behalf of the City.
Prepared by: Karl Keel
