R!!B-Request for Council Action <br />Date:10/30/00 <br />Item Number: M-l <br />Department Approval Manager Approval Agenda Section <br />Other Business <br />Item Description: <br />LELS Tentative Contract Agreement <br />Background <br />Contract negotiations with Law Enforcement Labor Services (LELS) have resulted in an offer for a one year <br />contract consisting of the following: <br />1)Increase wages, longevity, and uniform allowance by 2 % on January 1, 2001 and an additional 2 % <br />increase on May 1, 2001 <br />2)City will maintain 50% cost share of health insurance increases for family coverage <br />Alternatives <br />The Council may choose to approve or reject the offer. If approved, the City Manager is authorized to sign <br />the contract for 2001. If rejected, the contract will most likely be arbitrated. <br />Policy Objectives <br />The total cost of the LELS contract proposal is projected to be consistent with other union and non-union <br />groups. The union packages before the Council this year are in the aggregate range of 5.21% . <br />Financial <br />There are thirty-seven employees in the LELS bargaining unit. The 2001 proposal totals $2,205,636.30. The <br />total dollar increase of the package is $104,345.00. This is a 4.96% increase. <br />The total cost of the 2001 LELS contract is projected to be consistent with other bargaining and non-union <br />groups. <br />The staff recommends approval of the 2001 contract offer as described above. <br />Council Action Requested <br />Motion approving the 2001 LELS contract settlement, and authorizing the City Manager to execute a contract <br />incorporating the settlement terms, subject to approval by the City Attorney.
