In addition to its aesthetic value, the wildflower garden serves the educational needs of <br /> the community as well. The Nature center naturalists will utilize this new resource for <br /> their field trips with grade school students. Last year, a high school biology teacher an <br /> a university professor brought in their students to show the growth and reproduction of <br /> a native plant community. <br /> POLICY OBJECTIVE <br /> The attached proposal is consistent with the policy of leveraging other public and private <br /> resources to obtain funding to offset the costs of development. It is also consistent with <br /> the Park's and Recreation Systems Plan and the Harriet Alexander Long Range Plan. <br /> FINANCIAL IMPLICATIONS <br /> The cash contributions will be donated by Paul Partridge as well as much of the labor <br /> costs. The city will provide some in-kind site preparation, organization and oversight <br /> costs for the project. <br /> STAFF RECOMMENDATION <br /> Based on the recommendation of the Roseville Parrs and Recreation Commission and <br /> the Systems Plan and HANG Plan, staff recommends that the City submit a grant to the <br /> Minnesota Department of Natural Resources for $14,042 for Native Wildflower <br /> Restoration at the Harriet Alexander Nature center. <br /> COUNCIL ACTION REQUESTED, <br /> Authorization to submit the application to the Minnesota Department of Natural <br /> Resources for the Native Wildflower Restoration project as outlined in the attached grant <br /> application at the Harriet Alexander Nature center and to send a letter of appreciation <br /> and commendation to Mr. Paul Partridge for his generous contributions and personall <br /> efforts at the Nature Center. Mr. Paul Partridge would furnish matching funds of $7,021 <br /> with some in-kind labor support from the City. <br />
