REQUEST FOR COUNCIL ACTION
r
DATE: March 224 1999
ITEM NO,- G-5
Depart m. t Approval: Mana er reviewed: Agenda Section:
Reports
Item Description:
Emergency Furnace replacement
BACKGROUND
On January 17 of this year, the bedroom CO detector at Fire Station# 3 (Dale Street), was in alarm
status indicating that a high level of CO was present near the location of the detector. A local
heating service vendor was called to investigate the source of the CO. The two gas furnaces that
supply heat to the living quarters of the station are original equipment (23 years old). It was
determined that f umace number one had a cracked heat exchanger that was emitting a potentially
dangerous level of CO and that immediate replacement was recommended. NSF was also called to
corroborate the findings. Furnace number two was also looped at as to determine its present status.
Although no visible crags were seen in the second unit, it was highly recommended that this furnace
also be replaced due to its poor condition and close proximity (same room)to furnace number one.
Upon recommendations from City Staff, two bid proposals were requested for furnace replacement.
Subsequently, both furnaces were'replaced due to the immediate CO threat to life safety. During
furnace number one rerrYOVaI it was noted that the air conditioning " " coil was rusted and non-
functional. It was recommended that the'W' coil be replaced at this time in order to save additional
charges for related service calls and dismantling fees at a later date.
FINANCIAL IMPLICATION
The total cost for equipment replacement is $4702.00. The funding would come from the plant
replacement fund.
STAFF RECOMMENDATION
Staff recommends approval of funding for em.ergency ftunacc replacement at Fire Station#3.
COUNCIL ACTION REQUESTED
Motion authorizing the use of$4702.00 from the-'Iani replacement fund in order to mitigate the CO
-problem at Fire Station#3.
