REQUEST FOR COUNCIL ACTION
DATE:03/11 /01
ITEM NO:v.A,,
Department Approval: Manager Reviewed: Agenda Section:
Item Description: Authorization for Application to Host the 2664/2606 Winter
National Senior Olympics
BACKGROUND
During the past 12 years, the City of Roseville Parks and Recreation Department has
hosted numerous State, National and International sporting events. The National Senior
Games Association has forwarded an application for the hosting of the U. S. National
Senior Winter Olympics in either 2004 or 2006. It is anticipated that between 3,000 to
4,000 participants, family, friends and officials will attend the games. The selected host
city must provide venue spaces for hockey, figure skating, speedskating, curling, cross
country skiing, snowshoeing and alpine skiing.Additional sports may be added by the local
host organization. The estimated economic impact for the events is at least $2.5 million.
Roseville would to seem to be the ideal host for such an event for these reasons:
• Access to world-class winter sports venues (OVAL, Arena, St. Paul Curling Club,
Como Park, metro downhill ski venues).
• Experience at hosting major State, National and International sporting events.
• Cooperating groups i.e. the Roseville Visitors Association, the North Suburban Senior
Council, the Minnesota Amateur Sports Commission and other community and
sporting organizations.
• Metro location with easy access via Minneapolis/St. Paul International Airport and
major freeway connections.
• Attractive recreation, cultural and shopping areas within minutes.
The application must be submitted by May 15, 2002.
POLICY OBJECTIVE
The City of Roseville has a history of hosting numerous State, National and International
sporting events for the purpose of providing participation experiences for local citizens,
cultural exchanges from individuals from throughout the world and the resulting significant
economic impact to area businesses from staging such events. This proposal is consistent
with these past organizational efforts.
1
