SUSANNE SCHUERMAN
N W I[l Sentinel Staff Writer
t
Your Pegional FA1RMON I The Fairmont C."ity Council will hold
NOWS "1100 public hearing Monday to gather input on changing city
elections from odd years to even years.
The city's Charter Commission has reconin-icilded the
change to bring city elections into accordance with state
statute.
In the next few years, the change would require adjusting
term lengths for local elected officials. The proposal calls
for the mayor and Ward I and 3 representatives, who are
elected in 1999, to serve three-year terms from 2000 to
1001. Future elections for the seats would be held in 2002
and 2006.
The council member at large and representatives of wards 2
and 4 would follow similar patterns, with a three-year term
transition. Council members elected in 2001 would serve a
term from 2002 to 2004. Subsequent elections WOLIldbe
held in 2004 and 2008.
In addition, filing dates for city offices would be adjusted to
comply with state statute. Currently, filing takes place not
more than 90 and at least 76 days prior to elections. If the
ordinance passes, election filing dates would be not more
than 70 days or less than 56 days before the first Tuesday
after the second Monday in September.
Only 27 of the 107 home rule charter cities, such as
hap: fai i-niontsenti tiel.comlnev s/stories/072499b.htm 1 4/1%02
