Community Input Meeting-Proposed Community Center
July 1 G,2002
Roseville City Hall
The Roseville Area Arts Council (RAAC) was reborn in 1996 by a group of local residents
interested in enriching the quality of life in the Roseville area through support and development
of arts in the northern Ramsey County suburbs. The RAAC promotes artistic activities as well
as an umbrella organization for other groups in the performing arts.
Some of our accomplishments include:
• Big Band Dances-the Roseville Big Band and the RAAC joined forces twice to host dances
open to all members of the community.
• Valentines Day Dinner Theater-a showcase of local vocal artists
• Rose Fest Parade participation
• Arts at the OVAL-a festival of fine arts and fine crafts featuring Minnesota artists
• Pottery in the Garden-a community rake firing at the Central Park Arboretum. This was
one of the events in the "Rose of Many Colors" arts presentations during summer 2002.
• Sculpture in the Park-a program currently under development to place significant pieces of
art by locals artists in Roseville's city parks
• Fiscal agent for other non-profit local arts organizations such as The Opera Project.
At this time, our affiliate organizations are:
Roseville String Ensemble, a community based organization of local, mostly amateur musicians
performing a wide variety of music from classical to folk at several public concerts throughout
the year. The annual Community Carol Sing has become a holiday tradition. Other concerts
have focused on Scottish music and some have engaged professional conductors to lead the
group through an ambitious selection of chamber music.
Rosetown Playhouse is a member supported community theater originally founded in 198 1 as the
North Suburban Patchwork Theater. The season includes a youth production in the spring, a
summer musical performed under the "big top" and a holiday production in the fall. "Mello
Dolly" runs through this weekend under the tent next to City Fall.
Our needs are short and long term:
1 Like most community groups, our immediate needs include meeting space of at least
1000 square feet that can be divided into two rooms. RAAC, its affiliate organizations,
and other arts related groups in the City (such as the Big Band, the Community Band,
Windjammers, Men's Chorus, Barbershop, and Northland Chorus) are in critical need of
meeting space.
2 Administrative support space for all arts organizations is also important, particularly in a
room large enough to accommodate a worktable, copy machine and mailboxes.
