I
was certainly surprised when I discovered that there was no outdoor pool (except for a children's wading pool)
and that the indoor pool had very, very limited access.
For Roseville to thrive, it's imperative to offer quality recreation opportunities for all ages. I grew up in a suburb of
Cleveland Ohio, where the community center, with it's outdoor pool and ice skating rink, provided a fantastic
option for exercise and fun for children, families and retirees.
In Roseville we have some beautiful lakes and while lakes can be great for swimming, they are not a viable
swimming option for everyone.
A few years ago we had family visiting from out of town. We wanted to take the kids swimming and found that the
only options in Roseville were 1) one 55 minute session around noon for open swim at the indoor pool in
Roseville; 2) the lakes. The nearest alternatives were the Como Park pool in St. Paul and the Shoreview
waterpark. This is still the case. I was really embarrassed for Roseville, not to mention disappointed!
Swimming is great exercise for all ages and we certainly don't need anything as ambitious as the Shoreview water
park. Swimming at an outdoor pool and taking swimming lessons in the summer is one of my best childhood
memories. It's important to me to be able to offer this opportunity for my daughter and I think it's also important for
Roseville to offer a wide variety of recreation facilities. Without this type of amenity, our citizens spend money in
other communities to swim. I urge the City Council to move forward with planning a Roseville Community Center
and to include an outdoor swimming pool.
Thank you,
Wendie F.
