Senate olds $41.3 B for Mass Transit age of 2
Published Wednesday.March 11,1 998
$41
iB for Mass Transit
} _ Senate OKs
By JIM ABl dissociated Press writer
startribme..com
ion wrld WASHfNGTON (AP) -- Fast-growing cities around the country
would get a bigger piece of the mass transit budget under an
agreement worked out in the Senate.
With the compromise Tuesday that would send more money for rail
modernization to cities that traditionally have not stressed lass
transit, the Senate moved closer to completion of a major
transportation funding bill.
The Senate has already approved $173 billion over six years for
highway building and safety, and on Tuesday wrapped up work on
the mass transit portion of the bill, voting 96-4 to fund mass
transit programs at $41.3 billion, up 30 percent over the last year
years.
Only minor issues retrained as the Senate moved toward final
passage this week after two creeks of work on the legislation.
Prospects were not as good in the House, where Transportation
Committee Chairman Bud Shuster, -P a., said Tuesday he did not
expect Congress to finish the bill by May 1, when the current
provisional funding plan expires.
Shuster told the National League of Cities that Memorial Day, May
25, was a more likely target for sending a bill to President Clinton
for his signature.
task force headed by House Speaker Newt Gingrich., l - a.., was
to meet today to discuss how to proceed on the highway and mass
transit legislation.
Shuster wants $181 billion for highways} bridges and safety
programs and $37 billion for mass transit, and douse leaders have
yet to resolve whether they can come up with that money and still
beep within the spending caps set in the balanced budget agreement
of last gear.
Completion of the mass transit portion of the Senate bill was
delayed when several senators demanded a change to a system where
a large part of funds goes to I I " old" systems mostly in the East
and North.
article?this lu =03 l 1 P-HIGHWAY-SPEND&date=11--Naar-98&word=funds&word=funding3/1?/98
