WORK SESSION AGENDA ITEM NO. 2
REQUEST FOR COUNCIL DISCUSSION/DIRECTION
DATE: 3/16/98
ITEM NO:
Depart.ment Approval: Manager Approval: Agenda Section:
ltetn Description: WALDORF AND CULTURAL SCHOOL CONCEPT
Backarouncl
A part of the Comprehensive Plan and the Vista 2000 report provided direction to
encourage new and solidify/retain the existing cultural, institutional, and academic
institutions in the community. By retaining these institutions the community can may
offer broader cultural and intellectual exposure (and growth!) to existing and new
families (and companies) entering the community. It is are opportunity to continue to
change with societal changes.
During the past month the Waldorf School, currently located at Fairview and County
Road B, has sought suggestions from the City about other appropriate locations within
the community to which the school could moue and expand. The school, anon-public,
non-religious school has plans for a complete K-8 grade school with up to 250 students.
The school would be in excess of 20,000 s.f., and could be on two levels. The
architecture will be innovative and yet designed to fit the environment.
In the past the staff has heard that both the Rymer Hadley Academy of Fine Arts and
the Japanese School are also looking for space in Roseville. There appears to be some
synergy of use (Waldolf weekdays, Rymer mostly evenings, Japanese School mostly
weekends).
Locations throughout the community may be available for such an academic, arts, and
cultural institution. The city may wish to partner with this opportunity. A number of sites
and building opportunities could allow the city to collaborate on the design and use of
facilities, and also leverage dollars and staff for the benefit of the community. Sites
within the community Include City Center, the Cornerstone Program sites, Arona, some
of the park sites, andlor sharing with other existing institutions in the community.
Zo Suggested Actfon
Council Direction is sought on how to continue this discussion.
Attachment:
Report by: Dennis Welsch, 490-2232
M:1RCAIWALDORF.RPT
