concerns about Waste Management's service, it would not be able to switch to a
different company.
Commission members debated the pros and cons of each option. Member
Willenbring said he thought the Commission needed more time to make a
decision. Member Marasteanu wondered why BFI and E-Z would agree to a
single-stream pilot if they could not offer the service city-wide. There was
consensus that there was not enough information about single-stream recycling
to recommend a switch right away. Members Rossini and Marasteanu
indicated they would support accepting E-Z's proposal for every week
collection to see if more frequent collection would increase participation as a
first step with a possible switch to single-stream collection in the future.
Chair Wilke moved to accept Waste Management's proposal for the current
level of every other week collection with a pilot program on single-stream to
occur as soon as possible. Member Anderson seconded the motion.
Wilke indicated that if the single-stream pilot was successful, the City should
then proceed with Waste Management's offer to implement single-stream.
Wilke said he felt single-stream was the wave of the future. Anderson indicated
he felt the same and supported Waste Management because they were the
company that could incorporate single-stream the quickest. Rossini and
Marasteanu agreed to vote for the motion in order to move the subject ahead.
Willenbring said he would not support the motion because he wanted more time
to review the proposals.
Ayes: 4
Nays: 1
Motion carried
8.
