Focus Group participants were quite concerned about subtle forms of bias which result <br />from lack of awareness about cultural and gender issues. They expressed doubts that interview- <br />er training can M*crease cultural and gender awareness enough to overcome this kind of bias. <br />The most c P only proposed method for dealing with subtle bias was to include persons from a <br />variety of cultural backgrounds, and women, on the interview panel. This method does not <br />necessarily remove the bias from the inwMew but it does ensure that more cultural and gender <br />awareness is built into the interview press. <br />Indeed, composition of the interview panel was the topic most frequently commented <br />upon across all Focus gaups. The rationale given for concern about the composition of <br />the interview panel was that an interview panel which consists of only whites, only men, and <br />only high-ranldng MWD officers is more intimidating for-minority and female candidates than <br />for white male candidates.
